South East Powerboating can cater for all of the recognised courses from the I.S.A. These include Introduction To Powerboating, National Powerboat, Safety Boat, Dive Cox, Recreational Powerboat, Coastal Navigation For Small Boats and Advanced Powerboat.

Introduction to Powerboating €200 pp

-The aim of this course is to provide a short practical introduction to boat handling and safety on powerboats being used on all Irish waters. It is ideally suited to anyone new to powerboating and whose primary role will be as crew on a powerboat. By the end of the course participants will be able to safely and effectively crew a powerboat and take the helm while under supervision.

-The course is a one day course from 9am - 5pm.

-For the Intro to Powerboating course we use one of our R.I.B.s .

-You dont need any previous powerboating experience for this course.

National Powerboat Certificate €300 pp

-By the end of this two day course the successful participant will be capable of helming without supervision in good conditions and familiar waters. They will also be safety conscious and have a basic knowledge of boat preparation and handling both ashore and afloat. Experienced boat handlers may also achieve this aware through direct assessment.

-The course is a two day course from 9am - 5pm each day.

-This course is run in both our tiller boat and one of our R.I.B.s Or your own boat at a reduced rate.

-Some prior boating experience is a must. Intro to powerboating, logged hours, or equivilant are all accepted.

Recreational Powerboat Cert. €320 pp

-By the end of this two day course the successful participant will be capable of planning and using your boat for general recreational use during daylight hours and in water with which you are familiar. It includes the typical skills you will need to enjoy family daytrips, longer coastal passages and sports activities like water skiing.

-The course is a two day course from 9am - 5pm each day.

-This course is run in both our tiller boat and one of our R.I.B.s

-Participants must hold the ISA National Powerboat Certificate or an equivalent certificate. It is strongly recommended that participants hold a First Aid Certificate and the VHF Licence radio operator’s certificate.

Safety Boat Certificate €320 pp

-The aim of this course is to introduce candidates to the techniques and skills used in powerboats which include escorting racing fleets of dinghies, windsurfers and canoes; providing safety and rescue cover for training fleets; assisting in race management duties.

-The course is a two day course from 9am - 5pm each day.

-This course is run in both our tiller boat and one of our R.I.B.s

-Participants must hold the ISA National Powerboat Certificate or an equivalent certificate. It is strongly recommended that participants hold a First Aid Certificate and the VHF Licence radio operator’s certificate.

Advanced Powerboat Certificate €400 pp

-The aim of this course is to develop boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation skills up to the standards required to drive a planing powerboat safety by day in all coastal waters, and by night in coastal waters with which you are familiar.

-The course is a two day course from 9am - 5pm each day with a night time segment usually from 7pm - 10pm on one of the nights.

-This course is run in both our tiller boat and one of our R.I.B.s

-Participants must hold the ISA National Powerboat Certificate or an equivalent certificate. Also needed is a coastal nav cert or equivalent. It is strongly recommended that participants hold a First Aid Certificate and the VHF Licence radio operator’s certificate.

Shorebased Courses

Coastal Navigation For Small Boats €200 pp

If its too cold for you on the open sea we will also be running a Coastal Navigation For Small Boats course in the near future it will be run in doors of course in the warmth. This course is a great course to refresh the mind before the ever closer season. The Coastal Nav course is also a brilliant way to gain knowlege in the area of navigation day and night if you are interested in a course like this please let us know .

- This course will provide participants with an introduction to the theory based skills required to read and understand the weather and forecasting, use charts for navigation and passage planning, understand tides and tidal information, and understand safety requirements and procedures to keep you and your crew safe while out on the water.

-Participants should have completed either:
ISA National Powerboat Certificate (open powerboats)
ISA Improving Skills Certificate (sailing dinghies, keelboats or catamarans)
ISA Competent Crew Certificate (sailing yachts)
ISA Helmsman Certificate (motor yachts)

-This is a 16 hr course and can be conducted over 5 weeknights or two days again its up to you, we will make it fit around your needs.

-Some of the sessions we cover on the intro to powerboating course are listed below .

  • Weather: Be able to identify common weather conditions and describe how they may affect your boating activities. Be able to identify sources of weather forecasts. Be able to interpret the forecast with regard to planned activities. Be able to explain the significance of commonly used terms in marine forecasts. Be able to identify the significance to powerboaters of common weather patterns illustrated on synoptic chart.
  • Navigation: Have demonstrated that you can: Orientate a chart or map using topographical features, navigation marks and/or compass; Identify features, including hazards, from a chart; Identify your position on the chart; Identify distances from the chart and accurately predict expected progress; Describe the effects of compass deviation and variation; Use transits to fix position and hold a course; Plot a course to steer, taking account of the effects of wind & current. Be able to describe the principal features of, and considerations to be made, when using the following equipment to navigate by day and by night: GPS, Electronic Chart Plotter, Depth Sounder, Compass. Be able to identify: The principal day marks used in IALA-A buoyage system and describe their significance; Be able to identify these buoys at night.
  • Passage Planning: Have devised passage/pilotage plans for: A coastal passage by day; A coastal passage by night; Entering into and departing from a harbour. Be able to identify where to obtain the information needed to devise a passage plan. Be able to programme a passage plan into a GPS set. Be able to accurately predict how much fuel you will need.
  • Coastal Knowledge: Be able to describe the effect tides can have on your boating activities. Be able to identify relevant tidal information on charts and in almanacs. Be able to calculate tidal heights and rates of flow for any port and apply these when planning activities.
  • Application of the “Rules of the Road”: Be able to identify the type, aspect and behaviour of vessels by day and by night from navigation lights and day shapes. Be able to identify the correct navigation lights and day shapes to use on powerboats used. Be able to use and understand manoeuvring (sound) signals.
  • Safety: Be able to describe when and how to summon assistance. Be able to describe how to manage a medical emergency afloat. Be able to describe causes, symptoms and remedies for: Hypothermia, Sea sickness, Sun stroke, Dehydration.
